Hoppers VS Folkestone  Cantera.

The hoppers enjoyed a great win over Folkestone Cantera Saturday, running out a 13-0 home win. The boys knew they couldn’t afford to drop points, just a week before the crunch game with Wye. Picking the highlight of the game is not a simple task, however, Aaron May’s hat trick from left-back was fantastic. He has worked so hard over the season to establish his place in the team, and a hat-trick on his birthday rewarded that effort. It was hard-work that paid off, exactly what youth football is all about.Well done Aaron! And with that result we are able to clinch top-spot if we get a win next week against Wye!

Match Report. 17/10/09.

Grasshopper Blues 4 VS Grasshopper Yellows.2

The Blues knew they needed three points off this game to keep touch with Wye who were sitting comfortably at the top of the table, 4 points ahead. They faced a Yellows team who had enjoyed some fantastic results over recent weeks, it was not going to be easy. The referee got the game underway, and it was clear Blues wanted to put the yellows under pressure from the start. They pinned them back into their own half, winning a corner from the first attack of the game.   The blues had had their conduct in recent weeks questioned a lot, and it was clear they were out to set the record straight. After a number of calls went against them, they focussed on the football ahead. Before long, they got their reward. Josh Todd with a superb solo effort, using that familiar direct running, a drop of the shoulder and finishing with an un-saveable shot. 1-0.  As the game progressed, it was clear Yellow’s would have a difficult job getting around the defence, Harry Hannaford cutting every attack out superbly. What was key in the early stages, were the full-backs getting forward, pushing forward the midfield. It allowed for a lot more chances on goal, and with Hannaford and Fowler on form, the stage was set for a second.

Hodson duly delivered, a fantastic strike from the edge of the area, powerful but accurate, he found the inside netting superbly well. 2-0, No need for an over-elaborate celebration this time, the same sporting gesture reminded the players that the game still needed to be won.

The half then turned into a midfield battle, the Yellows really picked up their form and were set on attacking the Blues’ backline. They threatened to break through a few times, but captain Casey Tallis was always on hand to clear the lines.

As half-time came, the Blues were deservedly pleased with the performance so far. Two fantastic goals from players who had been criticised in recent fixtures. The attitude in the first half had proved that Blues were all about the football, and the second half didn’t disappoint.  It was tight across the midfield, both teams making it difficult for balls to be put through to the forwards. This meant that the goals would be decided on who could win the battle in the middle of the park. To this aim, the Blues packed the midfield, Parrie Torres coming off for Rees Hammond, hoping to give them some much needed shape with a 5-man midfield. It didn’t disappoint, the strategy gave the Blues options all over the park. Hodson linked well with Torres, who set the ball for Beeching, the ball just wide of the mark. Beeching, annoyed with himself over the miss, played further forward than intended. Stretching the Yellow defence, making the full backs work. Eventually the breakthrough came. Beeching firing home to make it 3-0. The Yellows didn’t allow the goal to get them, and kept battling away, their reward came in the form of Tom Cullen’s first of the game, making it 3-1. Followed quickly by his second. The Blues left to wonder how he had managed to single-handedly bring his team back into it.

After that though, the blues got their football brains back into gear. Searching out the space, playing simple balls. Hammond was essential in getting attacks moving from the centre, playing to feet, ensuring possession was kept.  As the game neared the final whistle, Hodson, coming back off the bench, to break through and score one of the best goals of the game, firing into the roof of the net. A fantastic finish to a fantastic performance all round.  The final score Blues - 4, Yellows - 2. Although not a dominating performance, the Blues made clear their intentions of playing honest football, and came out top. Proving that an honest game is always the best game.  We now look to next weekends clash with Folkestone Cantera. A good team who are sure to make us work for the win, but if today’s game was anything to go by, we look forward to a good close game.

ALDINGTON SPORTS  1 V HOPPERS 11

20/09/09

Victoria Dynamo 1  v  Hopper Blues 15

After the disappointment of the first game being forfeited last week, the Grasshoppers knew that points were essential if we wanted to keep pace with the leaders. The Hoppers travelled to Victoria Dynamo without Jake Fowler, a key player at the back, but otherwise a full team. The Hoppers started very strongly and went 1-0 up inside the first 10 minutes with a great goal from Zac Searle; this was quickly turned into 2-0 a few minutes later with Zac’s second of the game. Dynamo did get one back, the ball bobbling cruelly away from goalkeeper Josh Cook. It was unlucky but the Hoppers pushed on, ten minutes later we were 3 goals to the good at 4-1 up, following another goal from Zac Searle and one from Kyle Hodson.   The goals kept coming and it was clear that the Hoppers weren’t letting up; Kyle Hodson and Parrie Torres both weighing in with more goals. Half-time came and the Hoppers were well on the way to securing a first win.  The second half kicked off with Byron Beeching adding to the goal tally within ten minutes. The Hoppers kept the shape really well throughout the game, making it hard for Dynamo to find any space. They were forced to try and play through the midfield due to the work rate Josh Todd and Rees Hammond were showing on the wings.  The score moved into double figures with Josh Todd, Byron Beeching, Kyle Hodson and Zac Searle all scoring within ten minutes of each other. In spite of the heavy score line, neither team slackened off the pace. Rees Hammond came very close to scoring his first of the season, but had to settle with seeing the ball sail wide. Zac Searle made it 6 goals in only 25 minutes of actually being on the pitch, scoring the goal of the game; latching onto Kyle Hodson’s pass, before chipping the goalkeeper from 18 yards out. He then went on to make it 7 goals; claiming the final touch in the midst of a goalmouth scramble. Not the most glamorous of goals, but they all count. The game ended, Grasshoppers 15 – Victoria Dynamo 1. Zac Searle topping the scoring charts with 7, followed by Byron Beeching and Kyle Hodson who both completed hat-tricks, and there was one each for Josh Todd and Parrie Torres.   It was a good game, both teams gave their all and the score line doesn’t really do justice to the effort Dynamo put in right to the end. Grasshoppers played very well and we really showed how much of a threat we can be. The boys showed spells of the trademark passing style that took them to two trophies last season, and early signs would suggest we are adapting to the new rules better than we could have expected. It was crucial we took points back to Lydd and the lads put on a great performance to go with them. Although still early in the season, we are all enjoying being back in the mix of things.  We now look forward to the Hoppers derby VS Grasshopper Greens on the 26th. It should be a tight game looking at the results the Greens have had, so we are all definitely looking forward to an entertaining game.
